Engineering Students Celebrate Project of the Year Award

Swindon and Wiltshire Institute of Technology Level 3 Engineering students got the opportunity to display their project work to a panel of judges at the annual Engineering Project Day on 20th May.

The group of students showcased the engineering projects they have been working on throughout their course to vie for a chance to win awards in one of four categories; Best Design Award, Best Creativity Award, Best Innovation Award, and the highly commended, Project of the Year Award. Leah Palmer, Principal and CEO at New College Swindon also requested a ‘Highly Commended’ category be added as the standard of work was so high.

Student Oren L. Dias’ project was a roof top solar panel cleaning system. He commented on his course by saying, “These are all new skills I have learnt over the past two years. I really enjoy the course as it’s not just theory based, I can also put my designs into action.” he continues, “I have enjoyed gaining experience seeing my project though to the end, I can use all this in the future.”

Isaac Cory, currently undertaking an Apprenticeship with BMW and shortly taking up a role as Maintenance Engineer with the car manufacturer says, “I have enjoyed my time at the college and felt it has given me the space to develop my skills. I have had Uni offers in the past, but the apprenticeship route is definitely for me.”

For his project Isacc developed training manuals designed to replicate the various stages of an apprenticeship. He hopes that this will support future apprentices in quickly understanding their roles and responsibilities.

The judging panel of four, comprised of Simon Clarke an External Examiner, Dr Tim Coole from Buckinghamshire University, Dr Ben Mhishi from RACE UK AEA, and Dr Chris Bidgood from Newbury College and University Centre. Simon Clarke really enjoyed the day and spoke highly of the standard of all the presentations, says “All the learners spoke very well and were very enthusiastic. The overall project winner, Dan Johnson, was very deserving and very committed – throwing himself into his project, even taking a week off work to complete it all.”
