What is an apprenticeship? An apprenticeship combines hands-on work with the opportunity to train and obtain a relevant qualification. It is a paid position and an apprentice must have the same conditions and entitlements as other employees working at similar grades or in similar roles. At least 20% of an apprenticeship’s time must be set aside for learning. This can consist of a range of varied activities, which will help develop them as an employee. Depending on the course, some of this may be spent at the college or training provider.

What are the benefits to your business? You have the flexibility to adapt your apprentice's training based on the needs of your business and even your team. There is a lot of financial support and funding available from the Government. If you are a levy-paying employer then training costs are already covered! You can reward existing staff by investing in their career development which also saves you money on recruitment and time on onboarding new hires. Apprenticeships show that you value your employees and their development. This breeds a positive culture where they are more likely to stay loyal and be more productive for you. Developing employees with high-level skills add value to your organisation, beyond their direct impact. For example, they will be better positioned to mentor and train other team members. Offering a paid job alongside a valuable qualification is a great incentive to help attract the best and most dedicated jobseekers. Let's see some stats! 86% of employers said apprenticeships helped them develop skills relevant to their organisation 78% of employers said apprenticeships helped them improve productivity 74% of employers said apprenticeships helped them improve the quality of their product or service Source: Government survey 2017
