These qualifications aim to develop students into professional, self-reflective individuals who can meet the evolving demands of the engineering sector and thrive in a constantly changing world. Designed to expand access to higher education, they also enhance career prospects for those who undertake them.

The objectives of these qualifications include: 

Equipping students with the skills, knowledge, and understanding necessary to excel in the engineering and manufacturing environment. 

Developing students with inquisitive minds, capable of working across various engineering functions, and possessing the confidence to lead, manage, adapt to change, and address complex engineering challenges. 

Providing the essential skills required for a range of careers in engineering, with a particular focus on manufacturing engineering. 

Offering a balance between employability skills and the critical knowledge needed for students with entrepreneurial, employment, or academic goals. 

Enhancing students' understanding of the significant impact that new digital and software technologies have on the engineering field. 

Providing insights into manufacturing engineering operations and the opportunities and challenges of a global marketplace. 

Equipping students with knowledge and understanding of culturally diverse organizations, cross-cultural issues, diversity, and values.

Allowing flexible study options to meet local and specialized needs. 

Entry requirements

3-year HND route

● a BTEC Level 3 qualification in Engineering 

● a GCE Advanced Level profile that demonstrates strong performance in a relevant  

subject or adequate performance in more than one GCE subject. This profile is  

likely to be supported by GCSE grades at A* to C (or equivalent) 9 to 4  

(or equivalent) in subjects such as Mathematics and English 

● other related Level 3 qualifications

● an Access to Higher Education Diploma from an approved further education  

institution 

● an international equivalent to the above qualifications 

Future career and study opportunities

The Level 5 Higher National Certificate provides a solid grounding on which students can build should they decide to continue their studies beyond the Certificate stage. On successful completion of the Level 4 Higher National Certificate, students can develop their careers in the sector through:

  • higher study

  • entering employment

  • continuing existing employment

  • linking with the appropriate professional body

  • committing to Continuing Professional Development (CPD).
