Health and Social Care FdSc

Primarily aimed at Health and Social Care workers, this highly flexible Level 5 Foundation Degree course will develop your knowledge and skills. The programme is designed to transform your knowledge of Health and Social Care.  You will study a diverse range of topics from Social and Welfare Systems to Science for Health and Social Care.  As the programme combines both classroom study and work-based learning, it will give you the skills and knowledge you need to be a confident and competent assistant practitioner.

It is open to people who are qualified and keen to explore new aspects of care – specifically for Assistant Practitioners, as well as Team Leaders, senior carers, support workers and similar roles.  The content of the course is varied and split across two years. You will have the opportunity to apply theory and new understanding to your own practice, developing yourself as a health and care professional. This is a full-time equivalent programme. You will attend college one day a week but will be expected to study and prepare for assessments in your own time. Year 1 is about developing the foundations for health and care practice across the fields of practice. This includes preparing for your academic and professional learning, biosciences, understanding the influences of health and well-being of yourselves and others, and consideration of underpinning values and beliefs.

Year 1 will enable you to further develop therapeutic relationships, communicating and collaborating in the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of care delivery within your practice. This will also extend your application of bioscience knowledge. The themes of public health, prevention and health promotion will be explored.

Year 2 the programme focuses on the complex care of people with multiple comorbidities.

You will explore your role leading, managing and coordinating care delivery, and the supervision of others. Throughout there will also be a focus on your and others well-being and the support required to develop confident resilient practitioners. You will explore the legal and ethical aspects involved in care delivery and apply evidence to everyday practice.
